The Free Gift
What do we have to believe? We first have to believe that we are separated from the life of God. “Your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you.”6 Sin has separated us from God and unless we receive the free gift of God, sin will separate the sinner eternally from God. This is referred to in the Bible as “the second death.”7

“The gift of God is eternal life.”1 Webster defines eternal as: “Without beginning or end.” The one, true, eternal God freely offers an eternal gift to the world. That eternal gift is life that is without beginning or end – eternal life. Eternal life can only be comprehended in the person of the Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ. He alone is the intermediary between God and men. Without Jesus Christ, there would be no eternal life, for He Himself is that life which is “without beginning or end.” He said: “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”2 We read in the Bible: “He that hath the Son (the Lord Jesus Christ) hath life, and this life is in His Son.”3
To become an heir to this gift of eternal life, one must come, by faith, believing the words of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Word of God has been sent to us from heaven, divinely recorded by holy men of God. The Spirit of God superintended these men as they wrote, and God divinely preserved His Word in order that even you might hear the Word of God saying to you: “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me and I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish.”4 Eternal life is God’s free gift to this world. How do we become recipients of this gift? We receive it by believing the World of God, the Lord Jesus Christ.5 We need to believe more than the fact of His historical existence; we need to believe His recorded words. We need to believe Him.
Satan deceives people into believing that eternal life rests in trying to be a moral person as though we could climb the ladder of religious works up to heaven. This however culminates in a false profession of salvation known as:”works-salvation.” Eternal life cannot be earned, regardless of how much moral effort we put into it. On the contrary, the free gift of eternal life becomes an instant possession when we believe God’s Word. God freely gives the gift of eternal life to those who believe Him.
Next we must believe in the substitutionary death of God the Son. Christ Jesus not only died for us, He died as us. “He was made sin for us who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.”8 Our penalty for sin was paid in full by the Lord Jesus Christ. God freely declares the sinner innocent (justified) and gives him the gift of eternal life when he believes His Word. Finally, we must receive this free gift. This is done totally by faith. We must receive the Lord. Jesus Christ as our personal savior. This is eternal life, and this is God’s free gift to the world.
Will you right now, admit your sin to God? Ask God to forgive your sins. Believe that the lord Jesus Christ paid the penalty of your sin.
