Steps to GOD
God is closer to us than we think. As the Apostle Paul stood, preaching on Mars Hill in the city of Athens, he said, "That they (men) should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though He be not far from everyone of us.:1 God is not very far from us. If we'll take a few humble steps, in His direction, we may just find Him. The epistle of James states "Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you...2
The first step toward God is the step of believing. We must believe God is really there. "...He that cometh to God must believe that He is..."3 Is there an all-knowing, all-powerful, personal God who understands your every thought? Yes, indeed, there is; and He rewards people who will seek Him earnestly. If you diligently seek for Him, you will find Him; He is not far away. Believing God is a definite step in the right direction, but this believing is more than just giving mental assent to a religious figure who is recorded in the pages in history. You must believe sincerely in your heart that God can meet your every need, especially your needs beyond this present life. It is”…with the heart man believeth unto righteousness…”4
Another step that brings you to God is the step of repentance. Repentance means changing your mind. You must change your mind (repent) from what you are in your own estimation to what you are in God’s estimation. God tells us in His Word: “…my thoughts are not your thoughts…”5 God estimates all as sinners "...all have sinned."6 We’re sinners, transgressors and law breakers. Before that law (the law of God) we’ve broken, we stand guilty of its judgment. If you’re a guilty transgressor of God’s law, then you’ve never repented. The Lord Jesus Says: “…except ye repent ye shall all likewise perish."7 Most people do not repent (change their mind) because they do not agree with the Word of God about the gravity of the guilt of being a lawbreaker. You are a guilty sinner in the sight of God; one day you will have to go out into eternity and be judged by that law “...it is appointed unto man once to die, but after this the judgemet.”8 Repent and believe God for Hs will forgive your sins.
Another step toward God, we could call imputation. When a sinner repents and believes God, he will receive righteousness. God will impute it. Suppose your bank account had a zero balance. Unexpectedly, a long-lost rich relative found you and deposited a million dollars into your account: would you be happy? The bank of heaven shows that your account of righteousness has nothing. When you repent and believe Him, God will freely deposit into your account a limitless amount of righteousness. He will “impute” to your account the very righteousness of His own dear Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Another step, as we come closer to God is a step we call substitution. What remedy has God provided for the guilt of our sin? He has provided a substitute in the presence of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. “Christ died for us.”9 Christ took the judgment of God for sin in our place. He bore our sins in his own body as He hung upon the cross of Calvary. Death is the penalty of transgressing the law of God. The Bible declares: “…the wages of sin is death.”10 That penalty was paid by Someone. This is called substitution. When the judgment of God fell upon the sin of this world, someone was substituted in your place and mine to take that judgment. “…Christ died for the ungodly…”11 (you and me, my friend) His death satisfied all the law’s demands. Why would you want to pay a penalty that’s already been paid by another? Christ, the Son of God, paid your sin penalty. Believe God! Repent (change your mind) and agree with God about the substitutionary death of Christ for you.
The last step as your approach God is the step of receiving. You must receive the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour. If Christ paid your sin debt, then receive Him as your Saviour. Let Him save you from your sins. How can you really do this? You can call on Him in prayer. As the Bible says, “…whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”12 You can call on the Lord (pray). Tell God that you’re a sinner. Admit that you’ve broken the law of God and that that Law condemns the sinner. Thank Him for providing a substitute, in His Son to pay the penalty of death in your place. And most important, receive the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour. The Lord Jesus says “Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to him…” Ask the Lord Jesus Christ to come in to your heart and give you eternal life today.
These are the steps to God. Which way are you going?
